Contemporary farmer is no more just a middle-aged man riding a tractor because he understands that successful agricultural business nowadays is impossible without tech.
Modern agriculture is one of the most attractive spheres for investors as the increasing demand for food is not just a modern trend but a dire necessity. Today, farmers all over the world face the challenge of increasing the yield output while simultaneously decreasing the usage of resources. These two conflicting goals brought IT-technologies to the world of farming. Modern farmers can apply technologies at any production stage – from planning the cultivation of land to managing the supply chains of products.
Ukraine also tries to catch up with tech trends in agriculture, as it remains the main source of income for local budgets. Farmers are eagerly implementing IT solutions at their farms, including those developed in Ukraine.
GPS-tracking allows to control the movement of agricultural vehicles and fuel consumption as well as prevents the theft of yield
A contemporary farmer can hardly imagine managing agricultural production without GPS. The usage of this technology has already extended far beyond the supervision of vehicles movement and control of cargo weight. Farmers are intended to push its usage to the limit: starting with managing fuel consumption and finishing by monitoring microclimate inside the vehicle’s cabin. By applying such systems in agriculture one can substantially decrease the consumption of resources and optimize production workflow.
Preventing theft – is another important function of GPS-systems, which is lifesaving for small and medium-sized agricultural producers. Majorly the theft of yield occurs directly in fields during harvesting. In order to prevent it, farmers equip their agricultural vehicles with «friend-or-foe» type of identification systems, which are built around BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology. It allows reading the data about grain carrier (the license plate number, information about the driver, etc.) via BLE-mark when the vehicle approaches the harvester. Afterward, this information is transferred to the dispatcher server: uploading of data is possible only in case it is consistent with the data already available in the system.
The parallel driving system will improve profitability
Navigation systems enable to control the vehicles’ movement via specialized software installed on the smartphone or tablet. The tractor will strictly follow the preset route, which will allow to substantially decrease the number of missed lines, save resources, materials, fuel and time. If equipped with proper technologies, agricultural vehicles can operate even during night time and in bad weather conditions, when visibility is low due to rain. Furthermore, if to equip the tractor with a navigation system and hydraulic autopilot, one will be able to «drive» it with a laptop or tablet sitting at the office desk.
Real Time Kinematic systems (RTK) increase the precision of farming
Application of RTK-signals in modern farming allows conducting agricultural operations with high level of precision – up to 2-5 centimeters. The accuracy of RTK-sensors operation depends on the distance between the vehicle and RTK-antenna (base station). The operating range of the base station, which can be mobile or stationary, ranges from 4 to 50 kilometers. The positioning data received within a couple of seconds is transferred to the receiver installed on the tractor via GSM network, allowing for real-time coordination of its operation. It enables to ensure the high repetitive positioning accuracy, which plays a crucial part during such precision-demanding processes as seedbeds formation, planting of tilled crops and cultivation. Furthermore, processes’ automatization contributes to the decrease of the level of drivers’ fatigue.
eFramer technology makes control over agricultural production via smartphone possible
The key feature of eFarmer is the combination of parallel driving and management information system technologies. By using these techs you can create field reports and logbooks directly on your smartphone. All data related to agricultural production, such as distance covered by vehicles, types of operation conducted, timespan and usage of resources is added to the field report and is then saved on a cloud server. Such comprehensive reports enable farmers to take more reasonable and effective decisions.
Agricultural meteorology helps to define the most suitable weather conditions for concrete agricultural operations
For example, the MeteoTreksystem collects data about weather and transfers it via GPRS-channel. This meteorological station enables to measure the air temperature and humidity, wind speed and direction, amount of precipitation, atmospheric pressure, the temperature of soil as well as solar radiation intensity. MeteoTrek system is autonomous and operates 24/7: it is power by a solar battery, and when there is no sun – by an inbuilt accumulator. The collected data is processed by the special software and is subsequently transferred to the server. Monitoring of the obtained results provides for better planning and timing of planting, irrigation and fertilization processes.
Fight against pest requires cooperation
By using ultraviolet range shooting you can monitor the evolution of pest. Crop Care project by eFarmer enables farmers to exchange information about pest online. It allows neighboring farms to understand what to expect and what to be prepared for. The system works via a mobile application which helps to easily identify the type of insect or disease which affected the plant, as well as relevant pesticides to fight it.
At the initial stage, the investments in tech may constitute a substantial part of your budget. Though, refusing to use technologies the farmer loses twice: at first by bearing additional expenditures and then by losing part of the harvest. The amount of cultivated land is not a key success factor. It’s not the size of a land parcel which matters, but the ability and competence to use available resources as effectively as possible.
