5 non-food products that enable Ukraine to decently compete on the world market
28 бер. 2016 р.
Yes, in agriculture we practically have no equal competitors. Here Ukraine competes with global giants: the USA, European Union, India and China. By the way, did you know that the stereotype of the "potato princess" of Belarus had been destroyed long time ago? Ukraine takes the 4 th place in the world in regards to the production of potatoes, and Belarus, in its turn, takes only the 9 th position.
Ukraine is among the TOP-10 world leaders in the production of fruits and vegetables:
However, agriculture is not all. We picked up 5 non-food products that enable Ukraine to compete on the world market.
Ukraine takes 5 th place in the world for the export of anhydrous ammonia
In 2014, 2.419 million tons of anhydrous ammonia was produced in Ukraine. China, the world leader in this segment, produced 44 million tons of anhydrous ammonia. In 2013, Ukraine was among the five largest exporters of ammonia in the world.
Anhydrous ammonia is nitrogen fertilizer. It is produced by liquefaction of ammonia gas under high pressure. It is used in agriculture and industry.
7 th place in the world for the production of kaolin and kaolin clay
In the production of kaolin Ukraine gives way to the USA, Great Britain, Uzbekistan, Germany, Brazil and the Czech Republic. In 2014, 2675 thousand tons of kaolin and kaolin clays were produced in Ukraine. Kaolin deposits are located in Kirovograd, Sumy, Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, and Donetsk regions.
Out of the explored reserves of kaolin in Ukraine:
10 th place for the extraction of uranium
In 2014, Ukraine produced 926 tons of uranium, and with this indicator Ukraine is among the TOP-10 countries for the extraction of uranium.
According to the World Nuclear Association, 117.7 thousand tons of uranium is stored in the explored Ukrainian fields. The main deposits of uranium are located in the Kirovograd uranium ore basin. But as for the Ukrainian ore, there is low uranium content in it: the content of uranium in the Ukrainian ore is 0.1%, and, for example, in Canada this index is 10%.
Uranium is very hard, light gray metal. It is extracted from the uranium ores. Uranium is most widely used as a nuclear fuel in industry.
11 th place in the world for the production of perlite
Most of the perlite is mined in Turkey, Greece and China. In 2012, 887.6 thousand tons of perlite was produced in Turkey, and in Ukraine 36 tons of perlite was produced in the same year; this number is a little bit smaller than in Russia and Thailand. Perlite deposits are located in the Zakarpattia region.
Perlite is a rock of volcanic origin. It is fireproof, has heat and sound insulating properties. Perlite is used in construction, oil refining and gas industry, and medicine. The ground perlite after the heat treatment is applied in the agricultural business for the storage, germination and hydroponic cultivation of plants.
20 th place in the world for the production of feldspar
Mined feldspar – minerals that make up the rock – is mined in Ukraine as well. More than a half of the world's feldspar is mined in Italy, Turkey and China. In 2011, 176 thousand tons of feldspar, which amounted to 0.86% of world production of these minerals, were produced in Ukraine. In the production of feldspar Ukraine competes with Vietnam, Portugal and Egypt.
Feldspar is a general name of the group of minerals widely distributed in nature. They are used in the ceramics and glass industries as a flux and raw materials. They are also used as abrasives in toothpaste manufacture.
Ukraine is rich in natural resources. However, just as in the case of agrarian products, we must learn how to produce finished products from what we were able to grow and obtain from the Ukrainian land to achieve a new economic level. While most of our exports are raw materials instead of the products of high value, economic prosperity will not come.
- 1 st place in the world for the production of sunflower oil;
- 4 th place for the production of nuts and potatoes;
- 5 th place for carrots, cucumbers, and honey;
- 6 th place for cranberries;
- 8 th place for the production of cherries.

Out of the explored reserves of kaolin in Ukraine:
- 92% are primary kaolin reserves, which are mainly used to produce enriched kaolin for paper, whiteware and ceramic industries;
- 8% are secondary kaolin reserves, which are used for the production of refractory and ceramic products.
